Childhood wasn't kind to Uzumaki Naruto. Orphaned shortly after birth, the child with the whisker markings on his cheeks became the butt of all the other children's jokes. They called him a fox at first, but the nickname gaijin stuck when the others realized that his hair was growing in blond, and his eyes weren't black but a dark blue.

Children can be cruel, and sometimes the cruelty doesn't stop with name-calling. The practical jokes began as soon as he was old enough to walk. Hurt, confused and alienated by the other orphans, Naruto began to build up a mask- a happy one, so that the adults at the orphanage wouldn't think that anything was wrong with him. He didn't want to get anyone in trouble, even if he did dislike them.

Salvation came in the form of a teacher at the local school, Umino Iruka. The man became Naruto's mentor as the child entered middle school, and had an immense impact on the way he looked at life. It was Iruka who encouraged him to apply himself and study, and Uzumaki saw results. When it came time to apply for scholarships so that he might actually be able to attend college, he jumped at the first (and only) reply. Now attending Mishima, he's trying to branch out and meet new people, perhaps even make some friends.
